Who it’s for

  • Council play and grounds teams
  • Housing association and landlord staff trained to inspect play areas

What you record

Say whether it's a routine visual or an operational inspection, then add a check for each item of equipment and each part of the site, with its result and up to 10 photos you can mark up. Where action is needed, say what, who by and by when, and whether the item was taken out of use. State the outcome of the inspection at the end.

For council, housing association and landlord staff making routine visual and operational inspections of outdoor play areas under their own inspection procedure. Every check is recorded, including those found in order, with results from satisfactory and monitor to action needed and urgent.

Items taken out of use are recorded with the check, and the outcome says whether the play area stays open, stays open with equipment out of use, or should close until it is made safe. The report states that it isn’t the annual main inspection.

What the report contains

  • A cover with your logo and colours
  • Contents, and what the inspection covers and doesn't
  • The play area, the type of inspection and its outcome
  • Each check with its result, action and photos, numbered and dated
  • A summary of checks
  • Your name and signature where the report is signed off

Written with reference to

  • BS EN 1176-7:2020 Playground equipment and surfacing: guidance on installation, inspection, maintenance and operation
  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, section 3
  • RoSPA Play Safety: advice on inspection and maintenance of playgrounds

The template follows these as they stood when it was written. It isn’t legal advice, and using it doesn’t make an inspection compliant: that’s for the person carrying it out.
